The Police Came — The Music Didn’t Stop 1969 Rock Tee

At exactly 1:20 PM on January 30, 1969, two London police officers arrived at the entrance of 3 Savile Row with a noise complaint. They climbed five flights of stairs to the roof, where four musicians and their equipment were in the middle of the last live performance of their career.

The officers asked them to stop.

The band kept playing for another 13 minutes before finally agreeing to turn the amplifiers off. When they did stop, one of them turned to the microphone and said: “I’d like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves and I hope we’ve passed the audition.”

The music didn’t stop because the police came. The music stopped because the musicians were ready to stop.

About this design: British counter-culture protest poster style. A classic British police bobby custodian helmet viewed from the front — but the traditional metal star badge on the front of the helmet is replaced by a treble clef symbol. From under the helmet brim, musical notes stream outward and upward in all directions. The helmet is slightly tilted askew as if knocked by a sonic blast. Bold British graphic design wit.
