Liverpool isn’t just a city. It’s a port.

In the late 1950s, while the rest of Britain was listening to polite radio music, Liverpool was receiving something else: American cargo ships docking at the Mersey docks, and the sailors on those ships bringing back vinyl records that weren’t available anywhere else in England. Rhythm and blues. Motown. Rock and roll. Liverpool heard America before London did. And when four young men started playing that American sound through British voices, a brand-new genre was born on the banks of the River Mersey.

They called it the Mersey Sound. It wasn’t just a scene — it was an entire generation of Liverpool kids picking up guitars because the ships had taught them how.

About this design: The iconic Liverpool waterfront skyline in bold silhouette — the Liver Building with its twin Liver Birds at the center. Behind the skyline, a dramatic sunset in deep orange and red. In the foreground, the River Mersey rendered as bold horizontal lines with circular sound wave ripples emanating outward — the exact moment music becomes geography.
