The Gardener — Friar Park 1970 to 2001 Rock Heritage Tee
In 1970, the lead guitarist bought a crumbling 120-room Victorian Gothic mansion in Oxfordshire that had been abandoned for years. Its gardens — once famous throughout England — had grown wild and nearly disappeared under decades of neglect. He spent the next thirty-one years restoring them.
He planted rare trees from around the world. He dug out the lakes by hand. He built a rock garden with his own shovel. He used to give visitors tours of the grounds — not of the house, just of the gardens. He would introduce himself with a single sentence: “I’m a gardener who plays guitar.”
He died in the house in 2001, surrounded by the gardens he had spent a third of his life building. The property is still maintained by his family. The gardens are still there. Every spring, everything comes back up.
About this design: Victorian gothic architectural illustration. An ornate Victorian gothic estate silhouette — a grand manor house with multiple pointed gables, stone towers, and tall chimneys. The estate sits on a slight rise surrounded by elaborate formal gardens in the foreground — topiary shapes, a small stone saint statue, ornamental flower beds, a winding garden path. A few small birds flying across the top. Rendered in fine line work Victorian engraving style. At the bottom in italic: a gardener who plays guitar.
For the ones who understand that tending a garden is also a kind of song.
