The happiest song the drummer ever wrote came from a moment of genuine sadness.

In the summer of 1968, during the chaos of the album recording sessions, he briefly quit the band. Feeling unwelcome and depressed, he went on vacation to Sardinia with his family. One day, on a yacht, the captain told him a story: octopuses, the captain said, collect shiny stones and bottle caps from the ocean floor and build little gardens in front of their dens. He showed him pictures.

The drummer sat down and wrote the most hopeful song on the band’s final album. A song about escaping to a place where everything is peaceful and everyone is welcome. A song about an octopus’s garden beneath the waves.
