No. 9 — Experimental Avant-Garde Rock Tee

In 1968, four young men locked themselves in a London recording studio and made something that most of their audience didn’t understand at the time.

It was a sound collage — eight minutes of tape loops, fragments of speech, reversed orchestra samples, and a single voice calmly repeating two words over and over: “Number nine. Number nine. Number nine.” Half the people who bought the album skipped past it. The other half played it in the dark with their eyes closed and had their minds permanently rearranged.

Sixty years later, it’s still the most radical thing any pop band has ever released.

About this design: Experimental Fluxus avant-garde collage style. “No. 9” repeated three times, each rendered differently — first in clean Helvetica, second in hand-drawn distorted lettering, third in mirror-image reversed text. Surrounded by a surreal collage of cut-and-paste elements: a vintage reel-to-reel tape recorder with tape unspooling in wild spirals, sine wave visualizations, fragments of musical notation, an old radio dial, concentric hypnotic circles. Heavy photocopy distortion and Xerox grain.

For the ones who believe art should be a puzzle.
