In the summer of 1967, something happened that had never happened in the history of popular music.
A single album, released in June of that year, seemed to rewrite every rule about what a rock record could be. For the first time, an album was an experience rather than a collection of singles — a single continuous work of art designed to be listened to from beginning to end with full attention. It sold 32 million copies. It won four Grammy Awards. And it made the summer of 1967 the first summer in history that was universally known by a phrase instead of a year: the Summer of Love.
