The Haircut — 1963 Mop-Top Cultural Earthquake Rock Tee
In 1961, a German photographer named Astrid Kirchherr took a pair of scissors and cut her boyfriend’s hair in a style she’d seen on Parisian art students. Within two years, that haircut had crossed the English Channel, the Atlantic Ocean, and most of the known world.
By 1964, American barbershops were reporting kids walking in and asking for “the Beatle cut” by name. Parents were horrified. Teachers sent boys home from school. Churches preached sermons against it. It was just a haircut. It was also the most culturally disruptive hairstyle of the 20th century.
About this design: Vintage barbershop sign style — ornate vintage barber scissors at the center in polished chrome silver. Dark freshly cut hair clippings fall downward from between the scissor blades, but as they fall, they magically transform into musical notes and treble clefs. A classic red and white spiral barber pole on the left, a small hand mirror on the right. Tongue-in-cheek visual metaphor of style becoming sound.
