In 1962, a quiet man walked into a Liverpool basement club, watched four scruffy lads in leather jackets play a lunchtime session, and decided their entire lives had to change.

He told them to wear the suits.

Matching collarless suits. Polished shoes. Haircuts. No swearing on stage. No smoking between songs. No more leather. They resisted — they were rebels, weren’t they? — but eventually they agreed. The first time they walked on stage in the suits, the audience didn’t know what to make of it. Within twelve months, every teenage girl in England had a poster of them on her wall.

The leather was who they were. The suits were who they became.

About this design: The composition is split vertically. In the upper half, four identical collarless mod suits hang neatly on wooden hangers on a backstage clothing rail. In the lower half, four black leather motorcycle jackets lie crumpled on the floor, still warm from the bodies that just stopped wearing them. A dramatic overhead spotlight lights both. The visual tension between order above and chaos below is the whole story.
